Eat Locally! Community Supported Agriculture
Interested in eating more locally? What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?
Community Supported Agriculture provides a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from the farmer. The farmer sells “shares” of the crop/farm to the public and this partnership provides farmers with an operating budget for the season while the consumer receives weekly or bi-weekly vegetables, fruit etc. and creates a way for people to become more connected to the food they consume and their local environment.
Today a guest blogger, Jessica George from Denver, Colorado is going to briefly discuss CSAs and how to get involved in a CSA here in Colorado serving Metro Denver and Northern Colorado. There are many CSAs here in Colorado and around the country. Go to http://www.localharvest.org/ to find a CSA near you!
Now I will turn over the blog post to Jessica:
If you believe in organic farming for healthier food and a healthier planet…
If you believe in supporting small local farmers, and eating what is available locally, instead of what you can buy at chain grocery stores, on average shipped 1,500 miles to get to your plate…
If you believe in a healthy lifestyle, which includes getting the most nutrients out of your food…
If you would like to save money while supporting all of these important beliefs…
…then you’re in luck! Grant Family Farms is an organic farm near Fort Collins that delivers shares of their organically grown and raised produce and meats to different drop-off points all over CO. This program to keep food production and consumption
local is called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)!
Purchase one or more of our CSA shares (such as a veggie share, fruit share, mushroom share, bread share, or egg share), then beginning the week of June 14th and lasting for 26-weeks, your shares will be dropped off at a host-site that is convenient to where you work or live. When you sign up for one or more shares, you’ll select a location that’s convenient for you, and go there once each week during a three hour window to pick up your incredibly delicious, healthy, and ethically grown and raised food!
Did you know that most of the produce we buy in the grocery store has been harvested at least a week before it is actually ripe so that it can withstand the sometimes two weeks of travel time and long shelf life? Fruits and veggies, on average, lose 40% of their nutrient density within 8 days after being harvested, so when you’re starting out with produce that hasn’t even developed most of its nutrients because it was picked too early, and then it’s traveling around the country for weeks before you even buy it, you’re definitely not getting the health benefits you expect.
Particularly if you buy organic already, you’ll be amazed at the savings from purchasing a Grant Family Farm’s CSA share. And just think, instead of organic from Mexico or California, it was grown right here in CO, on a farm that has been family-owned since the 1970s.
Don’t delay! You’re not too late to sign up for the 2010 season (which starts next week)! Visit www.grantfarms.com, or call 970-568-7654 today!
